Bible Stories: Be Holy
After the Lord Jesus come to live in your heart, should you be different? Does the Bible have anything to say about this? Yes, Peter wrote, “God who called you is holy, so you should be holy in all that you do,” 1 Peter 1:15. What does this mean? Does it just mean when you go to church? Does it mean that you should sit and read your Bible all day? No, it means that you are to be holy in ALL that you do.
Every day there are many things that you do. You go to school, play, work, eat your meals, walk, talk, laugh and many other things. To be holy in all that you do means that everything you do should be done as if Jesus were doing it, for He is holy. If you are God’s child, then He is living in you.
Would Jesus cheat in a ball game? Would he slap a little brother? Would he tell a lie or cheat in a test? No, for He is holy. And He is a real, living person who lives in those who have put their trust in Him. That is the only way we can live lives that are holy.
God wanted His people to be different from the nations around them. He is a holy God, and He wanted, and still wants, a holy people. He had shown Himself to them as a loving Father who could work miracles for them when they trusted Him. But the people where like naughty children who were always getting into trouble. They wanted to worship a God they could see, so they set up idols and images. This grieved the loving heart of God.
He wanted to spare them the punishment they must receive if they went on in disobedience, so He sent prophets to them. A prophet is one who brings God’s message. Elijah, Elisha and Jonah were all prophets in the northern kingdom when the people were following wicked kings. Some of the prophets were commanded by God to write their message down so they would not be forgotten.
Some of these became part of the Bible. As we say the books of the Old Testament, you will notice there is a group called the Major Prophets and a group called the Minor Prophets. Each of these prophets was called by God to take messages to His people and warn them of judgement if they did not turn away from their sins.
They were to tell them also of God’s love waiting to welcome them when they did repent and return.
